SOUTHERN NEVADA NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

Las Vegas - Where you can scuba dive at sea level in the morning, slalom an advanced ski slope at 9,000 feet in the afternoon, propose and get married in the evening and then play black-jack all night long.

Death Valley National Park - explore the large sand dune formations, sculpted rocks, isolated valleys and volcanic craters along the historic 120-mile long desert park. Grand Canyon - From a distance, the mountains blaze shocking pink in the sun, pine green where there is underground water, black where canyons carve their contours, masses of magenta at dusk. The sight is majestic. The Grand Canyon is the largest scenic attraction in North America and is located 300 miles southeast of Las Vegas.

Hoover Dam - is located in Boulder City approximately 25 miles southwest of Las Vegas. The dam was completed in 1935 as a power generating plant, it was also an irrigation source for the seven states that the Colorado River flows through on its 1,400 mile course to the Pacific ocean. Educational videos are shown at the Visitor's Center daily. These videos depict the dam's dimensions, its height of 726.4 feet to its base, the 660 foot drop it takes to drive turbines seven stories tall and weighing 800 tons. Hoover Dam is not rated as one of the world's man-made wonders however, it qualifies.

 

Lake Mead - is the world's largest man-made lake located behind the immense Hoover Dam. The lake attracts over 4 millon visitors each year. The lake offers 100 miles of shoreline, sheltered coves, and beaches.

 

Calville Bay Resort & Marina - is located on Lake Mead, about 45 minutes from Las Vegas. At Calville Bay Marina you can rent houseboats, fishing boats, ski boats.

Mount Charleston - is our range's highest point,named after Charleston, South Carolina by

Dixie crew members of an Army survey team that mapped these mountains forest reserve in 1906. Being the eighth highest point in Nevada, Mount Charleston's propensity for capturing precipitation from the westerlies gave rise to the name Spring Mountains. The rain, snowmelt and runoff percolate through the porous limestone, spurtel to the surface in numerous springs and finally gurgle through the natural aquifiers into the deep artesian system below Las Vegas Valley.

The Charleston Mountains consist of a single ridge approximately forty miles long. Its western slope is gradual, the eastern side is extremely rugged, broken by great chasms and ridges.

Mount Charleston is approximately twenty miles north of Las Vegas on US 95 to a turn-off going west into Kyle Canyon.

Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort at Lee Canyon - From of lights of Las Vegas high in the pine trees of the Toiyabe National Forest a truly different light shines in the eyes of skiers and showboarders as they carve and glide through the most exciting theme part Las Vegas has to offer.

Three double chairlifts take you from the base lodge at 8,510 feet to 9,510 feet overlooking Lee Canyon. Fantastic skiing for all levels can be found on the twelve trails and in the snowboard park. You can drive up or ride one of the free Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort busses. Complete rentals including clothing and snowboards await you in the fireside lodge.

Lodge, lifts, and ski school open at 9 am and close at 4 pm, on Saturday at 10 pm. Natural snow, snowmaking and superb grooming allows the resort to be open Thanksgiving through Easter. Red Rock Canyon - This is home of the Red Rock Escarpment, a 3,000 foot high mass of milticolored pinnacles and boulders jutting from the canyon floor. This beautiful area is certain to be a hikers delight. Red Rock is located west of Las Vegas off West Charleston Blvd.

Guided tours through the historic buildings are available on the weekends and holidays.
